“Sheltering Hearts Fundraising Banquet” Raises $63,000
More than 220 members of the community gathered at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center on April 18 to celebrate their support for the Christian Shelter. Our “Sheltering Hearts Fundraising Banquet” raised more than $63,000 for the vital programs that provide care and emergency housing for the needy. The evening also featured a silent auction which contributed significantly to the fundraising proceeds.
The event featured several notable local people and program segments that included music, personal stories and praise for the Lord. Heidi Kristine, the familiar WMDT-TV local news anchor, was the evening’s emcee. She led the audience through segments that were festive, often inspirational, and sometimes prayerful. The evening opened with a powerful invocation by Rev. Mark Thompson from the Emmanuel Church’s Benny Street campus. Thompson is also a member of the Christian Shelter’s board of directors. Musician JJ Remo performed several contemporary songs showcasing his voice and guitar skills.
The banquet’s keynote speaker was Pastor Dana Stauffer, Lead Pastor of the City Church, Fruitland. She offered a rousing speech that recalled the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well (John 4), and how Christ revealed his role as the Messiah and offering “living water.” She reminded those who assist the homeless today that Jesus went to places most people didn’t want to go. “The hurting need to know that there is someone who will go to those places that others won’t” she declared. Stauffer then bridged to Matthew 25: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” By the time she finished her speech, the audience was jubilant and expressive in praise.
After this inspirational speech, the Shelter proudly presented awards to several volunteers. Trenee Robinson received the Volunteer Award, and Paul Ranney and Bernard Carter received recognition with Faith Leader Awards. These volunteers were recognized for their service and dedication which makes a lasting difference to the Shelter’s guests.
Closing remarks were offered by Bishop Anthony Dickerson, Executive Director of the Christian Shelter, stating “This event not only raises critical funds, but also reminds us of the power of faith, community, and compassion.”
